How Medicare covers mental health

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Learn how Medicare covers mental health care services so you know what’s available to you.

Last year my good friend’s son passed away. It was really hard for her. I saw her struggle with depression and grief. I think many of us can relate. We’ve all had times in our life when we’ve felt down or depressed and needed extra help to get through it. Thankfully, my friend got the professional help she needed and a lot of it was paid for by her Medicare plan.

Coverage for mental health services is an important part of your Medicare plan. Studies show that 15 to 20 percent of older adults in the U.S. experience depression or have some sort of mental health condition. Even if you don’t need the services now, it’s smart to know what Original Medicare and/or your private Medicare plan covers if you need it in the future.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) pays for a handful of mental health care services.

Where do private Medicare plans fit in?

Private Medicare plans cover the same mental health services as Original Medicare, and some may offer additional benefits.

If your plan includes Part D prescription drug coverage, it might also help pay for the medicine you need to treat a mental health condition. Check with your plan to see what meds are covered.

Mental health care helped my friend get back to being herself. You never know when you or someone you love will need similar help.
