My HealthPartners UnityPoint Health Medicare plan helped me get my life back
Thanks to my Medicare plan, my care and coverage coordination was simple and affordable – and they helped me get back to doing the things I love.
I’ve always been really active. I’ve continued to walk, bike, take backpacking trips and do CrossFit into my late 60s. Plus, I have three grandkids who keep me on my toes.
One day, I was getting their things ready for a sleepover at Grandpa’s. As I was carrying sleeping bags down the stairs, I slipped on one of them and fell – pretty hard. I fell so hard that I ended up severing both quad muscles from the tendons in my legs. Needless to say, I couldn’t move. Lying at the bottom of the steps, I yelled to my wife over the shriek of crying grandkids to call an ambulance. It was a scary moment.
I was rushed to my local UnityPoint hospital, where I saw a knee specialist. He told me just how rare it was for someone to have this happen to both legs at the same time. I headed to surgery the next day, and spent the following two weeks in the hospital. I was immobilized for six full weeks, which was challenging for someone like me. I’m so used to being on my feet. After that, I finished up my nine weeks of physical therapy sessions. The therapists were the absolute best. My surgeons say I should be back to normal in four months.
My experience with UnityPoint Health was excellent. Everyone, from the X-ray technician, doctors, nurses – even the gentleman who took my daily meal order at the hospital – was incredibly gentle and compassionate, which is the pattern I saw throughout my care journey. It was a whole culture of responsiveness and empathy, with an attitude of “is there anything else I can do for you today?” from everyone.
Being an insurance guy, I know how complicated insurance can get. It’s nice when it’s so simple. My HealthPartners UnityPoint Health Medicare insurance made my payments a piece of cake. Whenever I went to the hospital, there was no bickering about accepting my insurance because my care team knew the plan covered the services I needed. I used the myHP mobile app to check my bills, see upcoming copays, and track my spending so I could budget for the care I needed. We’re talking more than $50,000 of medical bills for each knee. So once I paid my plan’s out-of-pocket maximum, I could rest easy knowing my insurance would take care of the rest.
It’s been a long journey, and I’m so thankful for HealthPartners UnityPoint Health Medicare insurance. Thanks to my Medicare plan, my care and coverage coordination was simple and affordable – and they helped me get back to doing the things I love.
